The famous opening verse of the gospel of John points to Jesus as the word, or logos. In addition to pointing to Jesus as God and creator, it also hints at how the creation according to the Bible came into existence. In Genesis 1 the creation story emphasizes that God created by speaking creation into existence. The psalmist writes

By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, …for he spoke, and it came to be

Psalms 33:6,9

Not only does the Bible say that God created through His word. In Hebrews 1:3 and 2 Peter 3:5-7 we read that God also upholds the creation through his word.

Life is information based

A Bible reader will thus not be surprised to discover that life on earth is itself information-based. It is only in recent times that we have had this knowledge. The discovery of DNA and the information it contains about 70 years ago has helped us to understand that life on earth is both information based and information dependent. Life is not possible without information found in our DNA.

In the beginning was the word. Our planet resting on the Word of God
DNA and God’s word share common features

The type of information that is necessary for life on earth reflects in its sphere the function of God’s word. As Gods word both created the world and upholds the world, so is also DNA crucial for both creating life and maintaining life.

If all DNA was removed from a living person life would soon come to an end. More active tissues would vanish first, while stable tissues such as bone tissue would last longer.

We are all “spoken” into existence by a type of information that can develop and transform a single cell into an advanced human being.

No wonder the DNA molecule has been named “the molecule of life”. Without DNA life is not possible. The information in DNA has all the necessary information to create a healthy human being.

In 1 John 1:1 we read about Jesus being “the word of life”. In Him we find everything that is necessary to gain spiritual life and growth, salvation and eternal life.

God’s word and DNA represent a type of information that has common features. Both are necessary for establishing, developing, and maintaining life.

However, both in physical life as we know it and also spiritual life as described in the Bible, life is information dependent. It means that information is crucial, but not enough, for life. The cell must interpret and respond to the information. The parable of the sower (Matt 13) shows us that spiritual life is also dependent on other factors than just Gods word. This is a topic that we will explore further in another post.
