Sunlight is available to all. With very few exceptions, all people on Earth have the opportunity to be exposed to the healing rays of the Sun. So also is he who said “I am the light of the world” available to all.

Sunlight contains all colors

Sunlight consists of all colors, except black. Black, or darkness, is the absence of light, and darkness is easily expelled when light is present. So also spiritually. In the cosmic war against Jesus and Satan, good versus evil, Jesus can “deliver us from the power of darkness” (Col 1:13).

As sunlight consists of all colors it is an ideal tool to discover reality. Photos often become better when taken in natural light than artificial light. It accentuates the natural beauty of the object and renders colors in a better way than artificial light. It also gives depth and dimension to the image.

So also with spiritual light. We want to see each other as Jesus, the “light of the world”, sees us. Jesus looked upon people with incredible value, created in the image of God. He saw the human race with love, he saw the human potential, but also men’s need for repentance and salvation.

Thus, natural light reveals reality better than artificial light, both for good and for bad.

There is another spiritual lesson in the color spectrum of sunlight. As the sun has a broad and balanced light spectrum, so also with God. God has a balanced character. In Ephesians 5:9 Paul writes that “the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth”. God is love, but He is also just and speaks the truth. This combination of traits is maybe a scarce commodity in today’s world. Maybe you know some people who emphasize what is true and just, but lack the more loving traits. Maybe you also know people with opposite traits, who are very lovely and kind people but not so interested in doing what is true and just in secular as well as spiritual matters. God wants us to mirror Himself. Living close to God will manifest in the “fruit of light”: Goodness, righteousness, and truth.

Monochromatic light

Monochromatic light

Have you ever been in a room lit with monochromatic light? Monochromatic light tends to trick the brain by reducing contrast and depth perception and makes it more difficult to see the world as it is.

Maybe people have grown up in a home where the spiritual light has been monochromatic, and become influenced by it. Or maybe the person has distanced him/herself so much from the one-sided upbringing that he or she has become “monochromatic” but on the other end of the color spectrum.

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light. For the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth”

Apostle Paul (Eph 5:8,9)

God wants us to come out from darkness, and start shining for others. Not monochromatic light, but the same beautiful blend of colors as the “light of the world”: Goodness, righteousness, and truth.

Research suggests that the fruit of spiritual light share fascinating similarities to the effects of physical light. Read more in this article:
